Hedona - Fall of the Magister Lords
A human trickster rogue
Mikal Stalbar is the eldest of two children in one of the least prestigous crime families in his home city. Stalbar has a deep hatred for the government that ran his home city, blaming them for the decline of his family from merchants to thieves. Stalbar blamed taxes and government control of imports and exports for the decline. Stalbar began life as a petty thief and enforcer, but broadened his expertise to include smuggling as he grew older. Stalbar was good at what he did – his ability to transport magic items past the mage-lords guards was legendary. However, Stalbar’s younger sister was not quite so talented. Stalbar started to train her to carry on the family name, but she was hot-headed and impatient. Stalbar trusted her with a minor delivery whilst he pursued a liason with a pretty young courtesan, only for his sister to be confronted by guards. Her brash attitude led her to attempt a violent escape, during which she was cut down. Stalbar’s parents blamed him for leaving her on her own too soon, and he took her loss heavily.
Since then, Stalbar’s decline has been considerable, aided in no small part by copious amounts of alcohol. He became a rambling drunk, torn by rejection, and seething with hatred for the officials he blamed for everything. His expertise still remained the stuff of legends, however, and an enterprising crime lord hired him to transport several extremely valuable magic weapons. Unfortunately, there were also a number of extremely potent beverages included in the shipment. Little is known of how Stalbar came to be found by guards in the wreckage of an upended cart, but they quickly discovered several empty bottles of illegal alcohol and a mysterious package. Stalbar himself remembers even less. All he knows is that he appears to be in jail, he has a splitting headache, and he could really use a drink…
